I am a mixed media artist living and working in Penzance, Cornwall, creating multi-layered, decorative artworks which blur the lines between textiles, photography and illustration.
Pieces often start with my photography, sometimes featuring visibly discernible forms or at other times more abstract imagery and patterns. The image is transferred on to fabric, then worked in to by layering various combinations of patchwork, hand-stitching, paint, pencil illustration and gold leaf. Eco-friendly pigment inks are used for transferring my photography on to organic fabric and I enjoy incorporating antique, vintage and repurposed materials in to my work.
When it feels appropriate to the piece, I photograph the artwork in the manner of a traditional still-life, incorporating objects which have a personal connection to the work. These installations act as an additional layer in the story of the artwork.
I have a passion for colour and pattern in all its forms. Impermanence, alongside natural life cycles, rituals, superstition, folklore, myths and legends all hold a particular fascination.
I have always felt a real affinity with textiles and as a medium, it echoes the meanings within my work. Fabrics have a fugitive quality, they fade with light and time along with wear and use. They can be infinitely repaired with layers and stitch, developing their own individual story while becoming something entirely unique.
I have always been creative and a maker. I left school at eighteen after completing my A-Levels but didn’t feel the need to take my education to Degree level.
I amassed experience in both private and public sector organisations in SEO, marketing, PR, development, copywriting, publishing and as a buyer / product developer. Alongside my work I took various courses in textiles, floristry, web design, ceramics, printmaking and French (still terrible), to name but a few.
Following a move to Cornwall in 2004, I started selling my textile work in local galleries.
After the birth of my daughter in 2010, I established a business making textiles for children. I undertook everything myself from the making of the products to the styling, photography and promotion.
A few years later, I switched focus and became a freelance creative specialising in photography, styling, textiles, interiors, design and writing for clients in the likes of retail, hospitality and the creative industries.
On occasion, I have bought and sold vintage / antique clothing, accessories and homewares, as well as other handmade pieces.
Mostly self-taught and an ‘outsider’ of sorts, I have immersed myself in lifelong practice and play. My creative practice has been, and continues to be, the constant and essential part of my life.
